Something I did today:

Finished reading, "The Book: A History of the Bible". Really fascinating book. The author has a unique perspective, having served as the head of Western manuscripts for Sotheby's auction house in London.

Something I said today:

"...I wish there was a racist sunflower in MY yard..."

Something I saw today:

A Skyy Vodka bottle, stuck in a tree. Given it's proximity to 20th & K Streets, it is no doubt a remnant of a lively night. I thought the colors were poetic.

Old friends...

While walking through the mall yesterday, I saw a gentleman that I recognized. I couldn't remember his name or how I knew him, so I didn't say hello. But his face stuck with me and I tried like mad for the rest of the day to recall his identity.

When I got home, I finally remembered who he is. Or rather who he looks like.

I don't know him at all. As it turns out, he just reminded me of Sam the Eagle from the Muppets.

Go figure.

I used to be quite dedicated to my blogs. I updated them daily, often more than once. The last few years my blogs have drifted into obscurity. But as of late, I find the world seems to merit some recognition and discussion.

I had this neighbor when I lived in Monterey who was building a new home. A castle of a home. The trees around their property were dense and tall, obscuring any clear view of the construction. But what I could see was a beautiful elegant estate which someday, would be a visual feast to behold.

This wine is exactly the same. It was completely locked up at opening, very hot with some hidden fruit just barely there. Roughly one hour after decanting, it had opened up a bit, revealing characteristic sour cherry, a little gaminess, and even some cassis. Explosive at the beginning, and strong at the finish, but a bit thin in the mid-palate, which will probably evolve and come out after a few years of cellaring.

I drank it at Ella in Sacramento, which is readily becoming my Cheers. It's everything a restaurant should be.

A bit of history...

While taking lunch this past Saturday I noticed that an old building downtown was undergoing a bit of remodeling. The facade above the storefront was completely ripped out, and revealed for the first time (probably in several years) were the remnants of old signage. Judging from the art deco-style typeface, I would guess it to be from the 1930's or 40's.

As I recall, "Adam Hats" was a popular brand in the first half of the 20th century. Though I am having trouble determining if they indeed had their own retail shop in SF at one time, the typeface is identical to an old ad for Adam that I found from the 1940's.

In any case, I just thought that was interesting...
